What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) from the beginning of last century. At first he called his method the “Art of Contrology?. The exercices start by control over your belly and pelvis and strengthen the whole body. Mobilisation and fortification of the spine and stabilization of the pelvis are important elements of the method.

Control and correct execution are essential: breathing and the consciousness of activating the right muscles are the foundation of each exercice. This results in longer muscles and flexible joints as well as a stronger, more balanced body.

During WW I he exercised patients of the sickward and developed Pilates equipment as the Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, ...

In 1926 Joe Pilates opened the first Pilates Studio on Broadway, New York, where his work was very succesfull with dancers. Today his method is known all over the world with many Hollywood stars and showbiz people as enthousiastic followers.

After 10 lessons you feel the difference, after 20 lessons you see the difference, after 30 lessons you are a different person.J. Pilates

The full method consists of matwork and exercices on the equipment. You don’t do a lot of repetitions as in fitness forms, only 5 to 10 are enough with correct breathing and execution in the correct position. Therefore a Pilates Instructor requires a profound education and training with attention to anatomy as well as knowledge of layering and teaching the complete Pilates Method.
